Tampa Bay Rays – Tropicana Field

While in Florida several years ago, we decided to go to St. Petersburg to see a Tampa Bay Rays game at Tropicana Field. The Rays were hosting the San Francisco Giants and, in all honesty, we didn’t expect to be impressed by Tropicana Field. We weren’t impressed, but really glad we got to experience a game at The Trop.

Batting practice before the game

From our hotel in downtown St. Pete, we took a five minute cab ride to Tropicana Field. (We didn’t realize how close we were and just walked back to the hotel after the game).

Outside Tropicana Field

We walked around a bit and checked out the concourse area. We thought the player coming out of the wall was pretty cool.

The Rays Touch Experience is one of the coolest things we’ve seen at the ballparks we visited. The touch tank is located just beyond the right-center field fence.

We spent some time touching the rays.

We had pretty decent seats. Something we found surprising was that there is a DJ at the Trop down the first base side of the field. In between innings, the DJ plays music and tries to get the crowed hyped up. Unfortunately, the DJ made a MLB game feel like a high school game.

At Tropicana Field

Madison Baumgartner was the starter for the Giants and struck out eleven in seven innings and Brandon Crawford hit a two-run homerun for the Giants in the Giants 4-1 win. It wasn’t the most exciting game, but good pitching is still fun to see.

So Tropicana Field was not the greatest place to see a game, but a storm did roll through during the game and because we were inside and shielded from Florida thunderstorms, the game continued and we never even knew a storm went through. I’m really glad we got to experience a game at the Trop, but I probably wouldn’t go there again.
