Washington Nationals – Nationals Park

Since we live only a couple hours away from Washington DC, we’ve been to Nationals Park several times. Years ago, the law firm I worked for had season tickets to Nationals games when they played at RFK.

Tom and I went to a couple of Nationals games at RFK and even though RFK was a really old stadium, we still enjoyed seeing a game there.

At RFK Stadium

Nationals Park opened in 2008 and is a really pretty ballpark. The seating bowl is similar to other ballparks, but it’s nice.

Nationals Park is located along the Anacostia River in the Navy Yard neighborhood of Southeast Washington DC. It’s fairly easy to get to by taking the Metro. The green line Navy Yard Station stop is only one block away from the stadium and the Center Field Gate is the closest entrance. The Metro is packed on game days so give yourself plenty of time to get there and be patient when the game is over because almost everyone is lining up to get on the Metro.

The “Racing Presidents” are available prior to games to take pictures with fans.

Nationals Park has a Kids Zone play area for kids ten and under and is located on the 100 level of right field. They have a big jungle gym, batting cages, photo booths, a picnic area and a “Rookies” concession stand for kids with smaller portions and prices. The jungle gym is plastic so it gets extremely hot on hot days. When it’s too hot, they close it to the public. We didn’t spend any time there, but it was crowded with kids. Like most other ballparks, the Nationals welcome kids to run the bases after every Sunday home game.

We always have a great time at a game.

Enjoying the Nationals game

We really liked how the Nationals celebrate our military.

One of the things we liked the most at the Nats game was the Racing Presidents. At every home game during the 4th inning, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt race around the warning track. It’s pretty funny and the crowd loves it, but don’t cheer for Teddy because he never wins. lol As soon as the race is over, the Presidents line up for a photo opportunity with fans during the 5th inning in Section 131.

We really liked Nationals Park and thought it was a nice venue for a MLB game. It’s fairly easy to get to on the Metro and there are plenty of parking garages near the ballpark if you choose to drive to a game. (Garages open two and a half hours prior to a game). We’ve been to several games at Nationals Park and I’m sure we’ll go again.
